The article brings up to date the importance of further informatization of the higher education system, considers the main approaches to the definition and content of the concept of "electronic educational environment of higher educational institution" in accordance with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standards of Higher Education. The purpose of the research is an interpretative and informative analysis of the electronic educational environment of higher education institutions. Research methods are theoretical methods, including the analysis of reference sources, scientific and pedagogical analysis as well as analysis of special literature, system analysis, structural and functional analysis, comparative analysis, content analysis; empirical methods, including observation, survey, and expert evaluation. The article presents the basic regulatory documents confirming the importance of its wide use in the process of teaching students. It defines and describes functional directions of the electronic educational environment (psychological and pedagogical, software and hardware, and information and communication). The article presents the complex of characteristic features of the electronic educational environment and reveals its content components. The results of the analysis, identified characteristics and requirements were taken into account in the design and development of the electronic educational environment at the Chair of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Mari state University.
